HOW IT WORKS
How it works, in 4 steps
Any of these sound familiar?
One family paid for the meat and food
Another paid for supplies
Same amount for a single person?
→ Settle bulk buys by how much each person uses.
Log food, supplies and gas. FAMI-KAN works out who owes whom by ratios that match each household's usage. You can also limit an item to the people who share it. No sign up, completely free.
Don't let tedious money calculations ruin a great memory.
The Smiths paid for the meat and food, the Johnsons for supplies, and someone drove... who owes whom?
Enter everyone's payments and FAMI-KAN settles them in the fewest transfers.
I live alone and use a little; paying the same as a family of four is too much.
Set ratios like 1.0, 0.7 and 0.4 by usage. You can also limit each item to the people who share it.
We go every month and want to keep one record.
Keep adding to the same event; the balance carries over and you settle whenever you like.
FAMI-KAN needs no sign-up and no install. Set a ratio once — Adult 1.0, Child 0.5 — and it applies to every expense after that. We compare it with other apps, including where they do better.
Why FAMI-KAN is Best
Who owes what after a Costco run depends on whether you're splitting single items or the whole cart. A pack you divide down the middle can be split only between the households sharing it, while a cart of mixed groceries and supplies can be split by how much each household uses, for example 1.0 for a family of four, 0.7 for a couple and 0.4 for someone living alone. Say the Smiths, the Johnsons and Alex share a $420 cart, and the Smiths pay at checkout. With ratios of 1.0, 0.7 and 0.4, the total is 2.1, so that's $200 for the Smiths, $140 for the Johnsons and $80 for Alex. The Johnsons send the Smiths $140 and Alex sends $80. If a pack of paper towels was shared only by the Smiths and Alex, enter it separately with just those two under "Target Members". In FAMI-KAN, set each household's ratio once, enter receipts from the shared link, and keep adding runs to the same event. Settle whenever it suits you, and the settlement shows who pays whom in the fewest transfers.
Simple 3-Step Guide
No app downloads or accounts needed.
- 1
Create the bulk-buy event
Start an event and add each household that shares the runs.
- 2
Set usage ratios
Give each household a ratio, such as 1.0 for a family of four, 0.7 for a couple and 0.4 for someone living alone.
- 3
Log each receipt
Whoever pays enters the receipt. Split items shared by only some households separately.
- 4
Settle when it suits you
Open the Settle tab for who pays whom, send the transfers and record them under "Settled payments".

The worst part of any trip comes at the very end — when everyone's tired and someone has to sort out the money. Lining up receipts, punching numbers into a calculator, trying to remember who paid what... it brings a cold, transactional feeling to what should be warm memories.
Existing apps are useful, but often too complex or require everyone to install the same app. For family gatherings spanning multiple generations, we needed something simpler — and warmer.

Frequently Asked Questions
For things everyone uses about equally, such as a pack you divide into equal portions, an even split is simplest. For a mixed cart, a usage ratio like 1.0, 0.7 and 0.4 is fairer to smaller households. You can mix both in one event.
Enter it as its own payment with only those two under "Target Members", then use "Change shares for this payment only" to give both 1.0. An $18 pack comes to $9 each, whatever their usual ratios are.
If your group agrees, log the gas as a payment by the driver and it's split by the same ratios. Or add a Special Rule such as "Driver -$5", which lowers their share and spreads it across the others.
Log the whole receipt under that person. If the Smiths paid $420 and the shares are $200, $140 and $80, the settlement shows the Johnsons sending $140 and Alex sending $80.
Enter those items as a separate payment with only that household under "Target Members". If someone else paid, the full amount goes back to the payer in the settlement.
Changing a ratio recalculates every payment in the event. To keep past runs as they were, settle and lock the current event, then duplicate it from the history on the home page and set the new ratios.
