FAMI-KAN

How FAMI-KAN compares to Splitwise, Tricount and Splid

Checked by using each app on September 16, 2026. Compared apps are the ones people actually search for and compare.

FAMI-KAN is a free, browser-based bill splitter. No sign-up, no daily entry limit, and a ratio you set once (Adult 1.0, Child 0.5) that applies to every expense after it. It plans to show ads, has no mobile app, and does not work offline — see the table.

When another app is the better choice

  • You want a long-term ad-free tool. FAMI-KAN plans to show ads; Tricount and Splid have none.
  • You need it offline. Splid and Tricount work without a connection; FAMI-KAN does not.
  • You want an app on your home screen. FAMI-KAN runs in the browser only.
  • You want to pay inside the app. Splitwise hands off to PayPal and Venmo in the US.
  • You want automatic currency conversion. Splid converts across 150+ currencies.
  • You want to nudge people who have not paid. Splitwise sends reminders; FAMI-KAN only tracks who has settled.

Checked 2026-09-16 by using each app, plus official help pages for anything we could not test — Tricount's offline support, for example. Splitwise does not publish its daily cap; we cite our own August 2026 test. Other apps also offer ratio-based or household splitting; this table is limited to the ones people actually compare. Why FAMI-KAN does not convert currencies for you

FAMI-KAN uses one currency per event and keeps every amount in it. There is no automatic conversion. That is a decision, not a missing feature.

No single rate is the right one. The mid-market rate, the rate your card company applied, and the rate at a change desk all give different numbers for the same purchase, and foreign transaction fees have to be handled somewhere too.

Within one group, people pay in different ways. One paid by card, one changed cash, one used a card with a different markup. If the app picks one rate for everyone, it produces amounts that match nobody's statement, and because rates move, nobody can reproduce them later.

So the conversion is yours to make, not the app's. Set the event to the currency you will settle in, and when you enter a foreign-currency expense, use the calculator that opens from the amount field to apply the rate you were actually charged. Use the figure from your card statement and the amount you enter matches it exactly. FAMI-KAN supports 62 currencies. If you want automatic conversion, Splid covers 150+.

Why FAMI-KAN has no accounts

There is no sign-up and nothing to install. Create an event, get its own link, and everyone who opens it sees the same screen.

A settlement is only transparent if everyone can actually look at the breakdown. Removing steps between the link and the numbers is the transparency.

When an app has to be installed first, the organizer cannot tell what happened. You send an invite and you do not know whether the person installed it, opened it, or read the breakdown. If the amount is agreed while some people never saw it, the breakdown did not do its job.

There is a cost. Without an account, changing phones or clearing your browser data means you need the link to get back in. On the same browser, your recent events stay on the home page. Bookmark the link for anything that matters, or leave it in the group chat.

Why FAMI-KAN cannot turn debt simplification off

When FAMI-KAN settles up, it picks the combination with the fewest transfers, and there is no setting to stop that. So you can be told to pay someone you never bought anything with.

If you want to pay only the people you dealt with directly, group members into households or teams. Put "The Smiths (3)" on one line and the transfers happen between households.

We considered a switch and decided against it. Turning simplification off means more transfers. And to really honour "pay only people I know", each participant would have to say who they know, and when everyone on a team owes money somebody still has to pay outside the team — which means naming a payer per team. The arithmetic and the work for the people using it both grow more than the result is worth. If you need that switch, Splitwise has one.

Details and sources for each row

On the Splitwise daily limit. Splitwise's free plan caps how many expenses you can add in a day. The official help centre confirms the cap exists but does not publish the number. In our own test in August 2026 on a Japanese account, the third expense triggered a full-screen Pro promotion with a nine-second countdown. Public reviews report 3 (UK, Denmark, Taiwan), 4 (US, Italy, Australia, Belgium) and even 5 (US), so it varies by region and account. The cap resets daily. FAMI-KAN has no cap.

On Tricount's split options. Tricount offers "Equally" and "As Parts", where parts are set per expense. We entered 3x / 1x / 1x / 1x on one expense, saved it, and created a second expense: the split was back to "Equally". Tricount's own FAQ lists saved custom splits as "planned for a future update".

On Splid's breakdown. Splid can produce a Summary that lays out every expense against every member as one table, and share it as a PDF without paying. Exporting to Excel and the spending-by-category chart are part of the paid Splid Plus.

On Tricount offline. Tricount has an official page for offline expense tracking: you can add and review expenses without a connection and they sync once you reconnect. Syncing across devices and converting currencies still need a connection.
