Any of these sound familiar?

The driver pays all the gas
Should the driver pay the same?
Settle daily rides at month end

→ Settle carpool costs once a month.
Log gas, tolls and parking. FAMI-KAN calculates each rider's share and who owes whom, with a smaller share for the driver if you like. Settle once a month. No sign up, completely free.

Don't let tedious money calculations ruin a great memory.

Q.

The driver pays for gas and tolls every day. How much should each rider pay?

A.

Enter the month's costs and FAMI-KAN shows each rider's amount and who owes whom, all at once. No more handing over change every day.

Q.

Should the person who provides the car pay as much as the riders?

A.

Set ratios such as riders 1.0 and driver 0.5 to account for the car.

Q.

What about days someone didn't ride?

A.

Limit that day's expenses to the people who rode. Someone joining mid-month pays only their share.

FAMI-KAN needs no sign-up and no install. Set a ratio once — Adult 1.0, Child 0.5 — and it applies to every expense after that. We compare it with other apps, including where they do better.

Why FAMI-KAN is Best

How much carpool riders pay comes down to two choices: which costs go in (gas, tolls, parking, and perhaps something for wear on the car) and whether the driver takes a smaller share for providing the car. A ratio such as riders 1.0 and driver 0.5 is one simple way to do the second. Say a month of commuting costs $240 in gas, $60 in tolls and $50 in parking, $350 in all, shared by a driver and three riders. With the driver at 0.5, the total ratio is 3.5, so each rider pays $100 and the driver $50. The driver has paid all $350, so each rider sends the driver $100 at the end of the month. Carpools get awkward when change is handed over every day and nobody keeps track of the days someone didn't ride. In FAMI-KAN, the driver logs each fill-up, toll and parking fee as it happens, and anyone who wasn't in the car that day is unticked. At month end, the settlement shows each rider's amount, and the next month can start from a duplicate of this one.

Simple 3-Step Guide

No app downloads or accounts needed.

  1. 1

    Create the carpool

Start an event for the month and add the driver and riders.

  2. 2

    Set the ratios

Give riders 1.0 and the driver a smaller ratio, such as 0.5, if you agree they should pay less.

  3. 3

    Log costs as they happen

The driver enters gas, tolls and parking. Untick anyone who didn't ride that day.

  4. 4

    Settle monthly

Check the Settle tab, send the transfers, record them under "Settled payments" and duplicate the event for next month.

Why we built FAMI-KAN

FAMI-KAN isn't just a calculator. It's a partner that handles the math so you can focus on what matters: "That dinner was amazing", "Where should we go next?" — preserving the afterglow of time well spent together.

The worst part of any trip comes at the very end — when everyone's tired and someone has to sort out the money. Lining up receipts, punching numbers into a calculator, trying to remember who paid what... it brings a cold, transactional feeling to what should be warm memories.

Existing apps are useful, but often too complex or require everyone to install the same app. For family gatherings spanning multiple generations, we needed something simpler — and warmer.

Frequently Asked Questions

Add up the month's gas, tolls and parking and split it by ratio. With $350 in costs, three riders at 1.0 and the driver at 0.5, each rider pays $100 and the driver $50.

That's for your carpool to agree on. If you do, add a monthly amount, say $60, as a payment by the driver, and it's split by the same ratios as gas.

Give them a slightly higher ratio, such as 1.2, to reflect the extra distance. Everyone else's share adjusts automatically.

Keep everyone at 1.0 and have each driver log their own gas and tolls. At month end, the settlement nets it all out, so only the difference changes hands.

Record the payment under "Settled payments". It's deducted from what they owe, and only the difference, if any, stays in the settlement.

Yes. Lock the finished month, then duplicate it from the history on the home page. The riders, ratios and currency carry over, and the expenses start empty.

Yes. You can switch between three views — "Settlement", "By Member" and "By Item". You can see what each person paid and owes, and for any single expense, who is covering how much. Everyone sees why the number is what it is, on the same screen.
