Frequently Asked Questions
Add up the bedroom sizes and give each room its share of the total. With bedrooms of 200, 150 and 100 sq ft (450 in all) and $2,700 rent, the rooms pay $1,200, $900 and $600. In FAMI-KAN that's simply ratios of 1.0, 0.75 and 0.5.
One approach is to split rent in two parts: a common-area part shared evenly and a bedroom part split by size. For example, put 40% of $2,700 ($1,080) on common areas, $360 each, and split the other $1,620 by 200/150/100 sq ft as $720, $540 and $360. Each roommate then pays $1,080, $900 or $720.
You can raise that room's ratio a little, say from 1.0 to 1.15, or add a fixed amount with "Special Rules", such as "Private bath +$100". A Special Rule adds the amount to that roommate's share and takes the same total off the others in proportion to their ratios.
Log the rent as paid by that roommate. If Jordan has the 200 sq ft room and pays the full $2,700, the settlement shows Riley sending Jordan $900 and Casey sending $600.
Add the newcomer as a member and give them the room's ratio. A new member is included in existing shared payments, so untick them under "Target Members" on the rent and bills from before they moved in.
Changing a ratio recalculates every payment in the event, so don't just edit it at the swap. Settle and lock the current period, then duplicate the event from the history on the home page and set the new ratios there.
