There's no rule that a new hire must pay less at a team dinner, but if your team wants senior people to carry more, a ratio makes it concrete instead of awkward. For example: managers 1.5, staff 1.0 and new hires 0.5, or 0 at a welcome dinner held in their honor. Take a $720 dinner for 10: 2 managers, 6 staff and 2 new hires. The total ratio is 10.0, so managers pay $108, staff $72 and new hires $36. If the company is covering part of the bill under its own policy, enter only the part the team splits. With $300 covered, the remaining $420 comes to $63, $42 and $21. The tab gets messy because one person puts it on a card, a few people go on to a second bar, and some don't drink. Frequently Asked Questions
If the dinner is in their honor, setting them to 0 is a simple way to treat them. Their share moves to everyone else: a $600 dinner for the new hire and 8 colleagues at 1.0 comes to $75 per colleague.
Use "Change shares for this payment only" and give the manager a fixed amount. On a $500 dinner for seven, the manager covers $140 and the other six split the remaining $360, $60 each.
Name the categories by role, not by person, and agree on the ratios before the dinner. Everyone sees the same breakdown on the shared link, so the logic is out in the open rather than whispered.
Enter the second bar as its own payment and untick everyone who went home under "Target Members". The role ratios still apply among the people who stayed.
If drinks were on a separate tab, untick the non-drinkers on that payment. If everything is on one bill, a Special Rule such as "Drinks +$15" adds a fixed amount to drinkers and takes the same total off everyone else.
