Whether the driver pays less depends on whose car it is and who does the driving. If one person supplies the car and drives the whole way, a smaller share of the gas is a simple way to thank them for the wear, the insurance and the hours behind the wheel. If it's a rental and everyone takes turns, an even split may be easier to agree on. Say four friends spend $280 on gas. With the driver at 0.5 and the three passengers at 1.0, the total ratio is 3.5, so each passenger pays $80 and the driver $40. If you'd rather keep everyone at 1.0, a Special Rule such as "Driver -$20" takes a fixed amount off the driver's share and spreads it across the others. Road trips get messy because whoever is at the pump pays, tolls go on someone else's card, and motels are booked by a third person. With two cars, gas should only be shared by the people in that car.
