Why FAMI-KAN is Best
Half the adult share is a reasonable default for kids on a camping trip, but it fits some costs better than others. Kids eat less than adults, so half works well for food. A campsite may be priced per site rather than per person, so splitting it by age may not match how it was charged. Say three families share a trip. Family A has 2 adults and 2 kids (weight 3.0), Family B 2 adults (2.0) and Family C 1 adult and 2 kids (2.0). Groceries and firewood come to $350, which is $50 per 1.0: A pays $150, B $100 and C $100. The $90 campsite is split per family, $30 each, so the totals are $180, $130 and $130. In FAMI-KAN, set Adult 1.0 and Kid 0.5 as categories and add each family with its headcount. On the campsite payment, use "Change shares for this payment only" to give each family 1.0. Everyone logs what they bought from the shared link, and the settlement shows who pays whom in the fewest transfers.

Frequently Asked Questions
Half is an easy starting point. With Adult 1.0 and Kid 0.5, a family of 2 adults and 2 kids counts as 3.0, so on $350 of groceries shared by families totaling 7.0 they pay $150. You can lower younger kids to 0.3 if they eat very little.
A teenager can eat as much as an adult, so a separate Teen category at 0.8 or 1.0 may be fairer. For example: Adult 1.0, Teen 0.8, Kid 0.5 and Under 4 at 0.
On the campsite payment, use "Change shares for this payment only" and set each family to 1.0. A $90 site for three families is then $30 each, while food keeps the age-based ratios.
Untick them under "Target Members" on the first night's site fee and dinner. They share only the costs from when they arrived.
Log it with only that family under "Target Members". If someone else paid, it goes back to them in the settlement.
